More about Volunteer Opportunities and current projects
Thanks for all the caring emails and facebook messages! We are fine and the people and homes in Pichilemu are as well.
We feel very fortunate. Many people want to know what they can do: Come to Chile! Chile needs support from tourism!
Santiago is normal, Pichilemu is normal! Chile needs your tourist dollars and man-power volunteers to help re-build homes in other villages.
NEWS UPDATE:
Our scouts have seen TECHOS POR CHILE building temporary housing - looks like a good organization to donate to!
Saves the Waves Coalition will fly in this weekend and head to the 8th region with medical supplies/water filters, etc...
Donny Roth from Alpine Ambitions www.alpineambitions.com also has a donation button for the San Fernando and Pichilemu effort on his website.
The Pichilemu Institute of Language Studies is a Spanish language school offering intensive Spanish, semi-intensive Spanish, and University Accredited Spanish language courses on central Chile's rural coast.
The Place:
Pichilemu is Chile's surf capital located only 3.5 hours by bus from Santiago on Chile's rural coast. Pichilemu is in the 6th region of Chile, known for it's deep huaso (cowboy) culture. Pichilemu is most famous for its spectacular beaches with beginner to advanced surfing waves. In addition to surfing, students can spend time mountain biking, kayaking, learning to kite surf, doing yoga, horseback riding, and visiting near by farms, artisans, and wineries. Pichilemu is a small town with many restaurants, internet cafes, pubs, and discos. Everything in Pichilemu is within walking distance.
The School:
Our school is located in the historic district of Pichilemu in a large house built around 1900. Students are welcome to use the reception area for studying, watching movies, exchanging books, drinking coffee, and socializing. Our school also functions as an English language learning facility and we like to promote cross-cultural exchanges between students. The locals in Pichilemu are friendly and interested in helping students practice Spanish. Students can choose to stay with home stay families, in cabins with kitchens, at hotels, or hostels.
Our Teachers and Teaching Philosophy:
At PILS we use a variety of US college texts combined with many other activities and workbooks to make a complete, customized course for each group or person. Our teachers are college educated and have backgrounds in either teaching English, teaching Spanish, Spanish literature or translation. We hire creative, patient people who will work with the needs of their students. While our instructors speak English, we prefer that they don't speak English (or anything besides Spanish) during class. The quickest and most effective way to learn a language is immersion - inside and outside the classroom.
